Keeping yourself motivated is one of the biggest keys to completing NaNoWriMo as a winner. And this motivation almost always has to come from within yourself. So how do you keep yourself motivated even when it seems hard or pointless?
Give yourself breaks!
You can’t work yourself too hard; don’t sit at your computer all day staring at the screen if you’re drawing a blank. Take a break, get a snack, read a little, watch some tv, whatever, and then when you’re ready, go back and try again.
Don’t be too hard on yourself!
Writing is hard; writing a novel is harder; doing it in a month is near insane. And it’s just your first draft. Remember: you can always edit, redo, even scrap the entire thing later. Right now focus on getting it done. Not every sentence, scene, and situation is going to be perfect. And that’s okay!
Remind yourself of your goals!
This one may sound kind of obvious, but I don’t mean remind yourself to write 1,667 words every day. I mean remind yourself why you’re writing in the first place. Why did you take the challenge to write a novel in a month? Why are you a writer? Keep all those things in mind.
And when all else fails…DRINK MORE COFFEE!
Keep up the good work and don’t give up on your goals!
